Press Release

Challenge Kilimanjaro 2011

On 15th September this autumn two local girls, from Mitchelstown and Ballygiblin, will begin their climb of Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania - marking the culmination of a summer of events in the north Cork area to raise important funding for Mitchelstown & Ballygiblin Juvenile GAA club.

What's it all about?
In  conjunction with the climb, the club aims to raise €10,000 this summer by organising events for both locals and visitors to the north Cork area. Club chairman, Sean Keane says "This isn't just about collecting money from our fantastic family and supporter base - we're challenging ourselves to host events that will bring people into the town and give them value for money".

DEVELOPING THE STARS OF TOMORROW
Encouraging local children to get involved starts in primary schools, where professional coaches train both football and hurling.

€10,000 will fund one year of professional coaching

James Flynn (Secretary) explains why the club is investing so much in skills training for its younger members, "We have just under 200 members at the moment between 5 and 17 years of age. Involvement in sports instills teamwork skills, sets challenging but achievable goals and broadens a child's horizon".

DID YOU KNOW?

Mount Kilimanjaro, Tanzania
Africa's highest mountain at 5,895m (19,341ft) - over 6 times higher than Carrantuohill in Co. Kerry, consists of tropical rainforest, desert and arctic conditions and will take the girls 5 days to reach the summit.

Ciara O'Brien, 29 is from Mitchelstown and works for Pepsi in Carrigaline. Lisa Molan, 26 is from Ballygiblin and works from Medserv in Dublin. Although both have been involved in various sporting events previously including Achill and Dingle marathons and the Camino de Santiago walk they say this will definitely be their biggest challenge to date.
